My Biggest Fears

Date: February 5, 2013

Excerpt from the Pelican Rapids Press (MN, USA)

When asked how often he has been in potentially dangerous situations, Duncan said with a laugh, “I’m much more afraid of budget shortfalls.

I went on to say: Russia, Saudi Arabia and the U.S., to name just a few, are “tripping over each other to sell arms” to rival factions around the world, said Duncan.  “Yet, an organization dedicated to bringing peace has a difficult time raising money.”

2012 was a banner year for Nonviolent Peaceforce!

  • Our peacekeeping work in Mindanao, Philippines directly contributed to the signing of a historic peace agreement between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
  • When massacres occurred in South Sudan we responded nimbly by getting three peacekeeping teams to the trouble spots where they remain today protecting civilians in a very tough environment.  Our peacekeeping program in South Sudan continues to grow in numbers and effectiveness.
  • NP was invited to send peacekeepers to Myanmar by civil society and the government.  The project is being developed as I write.
  • Unarmed civilian peacekeeping received its highest-level exposure with two high level briefings at the UN in New York and the Geneva.
  • We received increasing media attention highlighted by an article in the Christian Science Monitor and a segment on PBS’ NewsHour.
  • We pioneered a method to quantitatively measure our impact in the field.

These are real accomplishments-and there were more- that are impacting real people and changing the way the world deals with violent conflict.

Yet, at the end of January we are struggling for money and key people are being laid off and cut back.

We cannot allow our work to shrink!  We have come too far.  We are on the brink of an historical moment.

Friends, there is enough money in the world to fully develop unarmed civilian peacekeeping and offer it to all civilians suffering from violence.  Ten cents on the dollar spent on the world’s militaries would cover it.

It is time that we recommit to seeing that NP and unarmed civilian peacekeeping gets the money required and deserved.  It’s there.  Help me get it.

You can protect civilians who are living in or fleeing violent conflict. Your contribution will transform the world's response to conflict.
