2006 Worldwide Work a Day for Peace: Beyond 9/11
Nonviolent Peaceforce announces worldwide news and events taking place during our2006 Work a Day for Peace Campaign –Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Gandhi’s Satyagraha.
Campaign updates:

  • Among those who have Worked a Day for Peace this year are:
    • Medea Benjamin, Founding Director of Global Exchange—an NP Member Organization.
    • Frances Moore Lappe, Founder of Small Planet Institute and author of Democracy’s Edge.
    • Rabbi Michael Lerner, National Chair of Tikkun—an NP Member Organization and author of The Left Hand of God: Taking Our Country Back from the Religious Right.
  • Peaceful Tomorrows, the advocacy organization founded by family members of 9/11 victims, has endorsed NP’s Campaign commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Gandhi’s Satyagraha.
  • Rajiv Vora, NP Asia Coordinator and Co-director of the Gandhi Peace Foundation for over 20 years organized the Centennial Anniversary events that took place on September 11 in New Delhi, India.
  • 6 Advocate Team Members from the USA journeyed to India to join the 9/11 events in New Delhi.
  • Michael Nagler, Founding Chair of the Peace and Conflict Studies Dept at University of California, Berkeley wrote the book Hope or Terror: Gandhi and the Other 9/11 and donated copies and mailing costs to NP to distribute for the Work a Day for Peace Campaign.
  • GPPAC (The Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict) noted NP Work a Day for Peace activities in their two most recent newsletters.
  • NP Local Chapters and Member Organizations around the globe held Work a Day for Peace events, and several more events are planned in the upcoming weeks. Events have taken place in:
    • Riverside, California
    • Norway- through the Norwegian Peace Association
    • New Delhi, India
    • Tucson, Arizona
    • Hudson, Massachusetts- a shared event between NP and the Peace Abbey
    • And many more!
  • So far, Work a Day for Peace donors have contributed more than $15,000—many of them donating one or more day’s wages to support Nonviolent Peaceforce field team members in Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
