Dr. Tim Wallis is new Executive Director
Nonviolent Peaceforce has a new Executive Director.
Dr. Tim Wallis assumes the role previously held by Mel Duncan, who conceived the idea for Nonviolent Peaceforce 10 years ago at the Hague Appeal for Peace.
Dr. Wallis formerly was Programme Director for Nonviolent Peaceforce before accepting this new appointment. However, his history with the organization goes back even further. He was present at the Hague Appeal for Peace in 1999 and later served for five years as co-chair of the International Governance Council (IGC) which provides global direction and support for Nonviolent Peaceforce. At each stage of his involvement, Tim has demonstrated a deep commitment to the work and vision of the organization.
Dr. Wallis' work as an advocate of peace and nonviolence spans more than two decades and several organizations. He holds a PhD in Peace Studies from Bradford University in the United Kingdom. He has been Training Director at International Alert (2006-2008), Director of Peaceworkers UK (2000-2006), Director of the National Peace Council (1997-2000), Editor of Peace News magazine (1995-1997), International Secretary of Peace Brigades International (1991-1994), Coordinator of the Commonweal Peace Library (1986-1990) and Campaigns Organizer of the Molesworth Ploughshares Campaign (1984-1986). In 1995, he led an exploratory peace team to Chechnya and was involved in setting up the Balkan Peace Team and a number of other peace team projects.
The unanimous decision by NP's International Governance Council to hire Wallis represented the culmination of a thorough global search that has engaged the IGC, staff and key volunteers for more than a year.
Dr. Wallis serves out of the Brussels office beginning 1 January 2010. Mel Duncan will assist him in the transition during his first few months, then assume a new position as Director of Special Projects. He will use his talents at fundraising, public speaking, outreach and advocacy.
