MINNESOTA, Minneapolis 01 August 2011 - Tim Wallis, Executive Director of Nonviolent Peaceforce in Brussels, Belgium, announces the appointment of Thomas Tarnow as the new Director of US Development and head of the US office at Nonviolent Peaceforce in Minneapolis, MN effective August 1, 2011. In his new position, Tarnow will be responsible for establishing and maintaining effective contacts and relationships that will help develop the fundraising capacity in the United States and overseeing all operations in the Minneapolis office.
Tarnow’s background is in fund development working for various types of non-profit organizations, with his most recent experience being with Habitat for Humanity in Minneapolis as Director of Resource Development, and previously with two prestigious theatre companies in the Minneapolis area. He is also an active member of the non-profit community in Minnesota, having served on various boards and committees. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Studio Arts at the University of Iowa, Tarnow spent four years teaching English in Japan, and worked for the International Institute of Minnesota’s Festival of Nations on his return to the United States. He is a skilled artist, selling his work through his own business for many years.
Nonviolent Peaceforce, a non-profit organization, was founded in 2002, and is an unarmed, professional civilian peacekeeping force that works in conflict zones worldwide. The organization’s mission is to build a large-scale, trained, international civilian nonviolent peaceforce. NP is sent to conflict areas to prevent death and destruction and protect human rights, thus creating the space for local groups to enter into dialogue and to seek peaceful resolution to local conflicts. NP most often responds to invitations by credible local organizations committed to nonviolent solutions.

Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) deploys professionally trained, paid unarmed civilian peacekeepers to protect civilians under acute threat of violence. Countries with current deployments include Sri Lanka, the Philippines and South Sudan with explorations under way in South Caucasus and Kyrgyzstan.
