NP Introduces Unarmed Civilian Peacekeeping to World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists

"Human development and human security go hand in hand," explained Atif Hameed, NP Country Director in the Philippines.  Mr. Hameed was a plenary speaker at the World Congress of Muslim Philanthropists www.thewcmp.org meeting in Doha, Qatar on March 20th and 21st.

Mr. Hameed described the effective role played by civilian peacekeepers protecting civilians amid war.  He stressed that strategic philanthropy aimed at alleviating poverty has to include civilian protection and conflict prevention at its foundation.

People in the Mindanao region of the Philippines have told Mr. Hameed "We don't want noodles and a sardine.  What we want first is protection and security." 

In his closing remarks, Amir Dossal, Executive Director of the UN Office for Partnerships, suggested that attendees learn more about Nonviolent Peaceforce.  "We are taking a look at them at the UN."

Ali Pahl, veteran NP peacekeeper in Sri Lanka, and Mel Duncan, NP Outreach Director, accompanied Mr. Hameed at the Congress.
